Transmission Adds Context and Noise to the Core Message

No signal arrives clean. Every transmission adds context that aids reconstruction and noise that distorts it — the network's edges shape what they carry.

Knowledge cannot traverse networks without context. The edges between cognitive actors are not neutral conduits but active shapers of meaning. To communicate is to propagate a signal across the gap between actors through some mode or channel — oral, written, printed, digital — and the signal never arrives clean. Transmission almost always adds to the core message: context that aids reconstruction, and noise that distorts it.

#The mechanism

What determines which knowledge flows where? Structure, before anything else: graph theory’s core lesson is that the pattern of connections matters more than the physical terrain beneath them.Martin (2011), graph theory lectures. Transmission is never passive at the receiving end either. Communication requires inference: receivers reconstruct meaning by seeking the interpretation that maximizes cognitive effect for the processing effort — the message underdetermines the meaning, and context closes the gap.Sperber & Wilson (1995), Relevance. #Why it matters

The medium is not an implementation detail. From oral myth to cuneiform tablet to printed treatise to digital feed, each transmission medium shapes what knowledge survives the journey and how it transforms along the way — form and content are inseparable.McLuhan (1964), Understanding Media. “The medium is the message” — the channel shapes what the culture can know. A message is a map, never the territory, and a good map keeps what matters. Context is the compression that routing must preserve, the nuance that has to survive the journey intact. That is why curation — the deliberate selection and framing of what to carry — is the most effective mode of transmitting knowledge across these gaps. Context is not optional metadata. It is the infrastructure through which knowledge acquires meaning, and the shared structures of the next factor exist to keep it standing.
